How we chose these Amplitude alternatives

We looked for open-source tools that overlap with Amplitude's core: tracking events, analyzing funnels and retention, and understanding user behavior. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, and self-hosting in its repository. Amplitude is a hosted product analytics platform, so we separate full product analytics from web analytics and infrastructure tools, and flag open-core and restricted licenses. See our methodology for the full criteria.

Important: product analytics versus web analytics

PostHog, OpenPanel, OpenReplay, Countly, and Vemetric offer product analytics with funnels, retention, or session replay. Rybbit, Betterlytics, Litlyx, and Fathom Lite are mainly web analytics, Aptabase targets mobile and desktop apps, and Trench is analytics infrastructure you build on. Pick by whether you need behavioral analysis or traffic reporting.

Important: licenses are mixed

PostHog is MIT except for its ee directory. OpenReplay is AGPL-3.0 with an ee directory, and Countly's free edition uses the Countly Lite license, which is a restricted, non-commercial license rather than standard open source. Trench is MIT, and OpenPanel, Rybbit, Aptabase, Vemetric, and Betterlytics are AGPL-3.0.

Closest to Amplitude

PostHog is the closest to a full product analytics suite, with experiments, feature flags, and session recording, available self-hosted or in its cloud. OpenPanel is a lighter product and web analytics tool with funnels, retention, session replay, and free self-hosting with unlimited events.

Legacy and young projects

Fathom Lite is a previous open-source version of the paid Fathom Analytics, and its authors say no features are being added, with only bug fixes. Vemetric is in open beta, Betterlytics has only about 180 stars, and Litlyx's last commit was in December 2025.

Maintenance status

PostHog, OpenPanel, Rybbit, OpenReplay, Countly, Aptabase, Vemetric, and Betterlytics had commits within days of this update. Trench's last commit was in April 2026, and Fathom Lite's in March 2026.

Why look for a Amplitude alternative?

Amplitude is a proprietary hosted analytics platform priced by monthly tracked users or events, with product data stored on its servers. Open-source alternatives let you self-host analytics, keep user data under your control, avoid event-volume pricing, and run analytics without cookie banners in some cases, at the cost of operating the data stack and fewer advanced behavioral features.
