How we chose these Asana alternatives

We looked for projects that cover Asana's core: tasks, projects, views, collaboration, and progress tracking. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, and self-hosting in its GitHub repository, and we flag projects that are source available, open core, archived, or no longer actively maintained. Asana is a broad work-management suite, so the list ranges from simple Kanban boards to complete platforms. See our methodology for the full criteria.

Important: not every project is fully open source

Planka is source available under a Fair Use License, Fizzy uses an O'Saasy-style fair-source license, and Sayr is source available under a custom license. Leantime, Worklenz, and Ever Gauzy are AGPL-3.0 open-core projects with commercial editions, and Huly is EPL-2.0. Check each repository's current license before adopting.

Maintenance status

Mimrai is archived and no longer maintained, and Orgnise has had no commits since July 2025, so avoid them for new production deployments. Most other projects here, including Plane, OpenProject, Wekan, Vikunja, and Leantime, had commits within days of this update.

Simple boards vs full project management

Wekan, Kan, Kaneo, Planka, Kanri, Kanba, and Fizzy stay close to Kanban boards and cards. Plane, Huly, OpenProject, Leantime, Taiga, Redmine, and Worklenz add views, Gantt charts, sprints, time tracking, and reporting closer to Asana's full feature set.

Goals, portfolios, and company operations

Asana's goals and portfolios are closest to Operately, which ties projects to company goals with ownership and check-ins, and Leantime, which connects strategy to daily tasks. Ever Gauzy and Ever Teams extend into ERP, CRM, HR, and time tracking.

Local-first and personal tools

Super Productivity, Kanri, and Freeter store data locally and work offline, which suits individuals and privacy-sensitive work rather than team collaboration.

Why look for a Asana alternative?

Asana is a proprietary work-management platform priced per seat, with limits on the free tier and no option to host your own data. Teams look for open-source alternatives to self-host project data, avoid per-seat pricing, work offline, simplify overloaded workflows, or integrate tasks with code, docs, goals, and time tracking.
