How we chose these Atlas browser alternatives

We looked for open-source browsers that overlap with Atlas, OpenAI's AI browser: a full browser with an AI assistant and agents that can act on pages for you. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, engine, and platforms in its repository. Atlas is proprietary and tied to ChatGPT, so we separate the browsers with built-in AI agents from the privacy-first browsers that have none. See our methodology for the full criteria.

Important: only two of these have built-in AI agents

ego lite and Browser Operator add AI agents: ego lite lets agents act inside your logged-in browser sessions, and Browser Operator offers research and workflow agents with MCP integrations. The other seven are privacy-focused browsers without a built-in assistant, so you would add AI through extensions or separate tools.

AI agent browsers compared

ego lite is a Chromium-based browser with isolated agent workspaces and parallel tasks, running on macOS today with Windows in closed beta and Linux planned. Browser Operator is a desktop AI browser for macOS and Windows with Search, Deep Research, and Workflow agents, and you supply your own LLM provider credentials.

License details

ego lite is MIT and Browser Operator is BSD-3-Clause. Ladybird is BSD-2-Clause, Zen, Waterfox, LibreWolf, and Midori are MPL-2.0, and Helium and Flow are GPL-3.0.

Privacy and AI keys

Browsers with AI agents still send prompts and page content to whichever model provider you configure, unless you use a local model. Waterfox and LibreWolf ship without telemetry and without remote AI features, and Helium blocks ads and trackers by default.

Maintenance status

Browser Operator's last commit was in March 2026 and Flow's in May 2026, so their development is slower. ego lite, Ladybird, Zen, Helium, Waterfox, and LibreWolf are more active. Ladybird is alpha software and not yet ready as a daily browser.

Why look for a Atlas alternative?

Atlas is a proprietary AI browser from OpenAI that sends page context to ChatGPT and can act on websites for you, with its memory and activity tied to your OpenAI account. Open-source alternatives let you inspect the code, choose your own AI providers or local models, and in many cases avoid AI and telemetry altogether, at the cost of less polished built-in agents.

#1

Ladybird

Independent browser and engine developed from scratch

BSD-2-Clause browser project backed by the nonprofit Ladybird Browser Initiative. It does not use Chromium/Blink, Firefox/Gecko, or Apple's WebKit and aims to develop an independent engine without an advertising or search-deal business model. The project is alpha-stage, initially targeting Linux and macOS.

66.4K3.2KBSD-2-ClauseExperimental alpha

Helium

Privacy-focused Chromium browser with minimal built-in services

GPL-3.0 Chromium/Blink browser that blocks ads, trackers, phishing domains, third-party cookies, and many fingerprinting techniques by default. Also offers Chrome and Manifest V2 extensions, native !bang shortcuts, split view, and HTTPS enforcement while avoiding a large rewards, wallet, VPN, AI, or cloud ecosystem.

21.2K607GPL-3.0Desktop browser

Pricing: Free and open source desktop browser; no built-in cloud sync by design.

  • Chromium compatibility with Chrome and Manifest V2 extensions
  • Built-in ad, tracker, cookie, phishing, and fingerprinting protections
  • HTTPS enforcement, !bangs, split view, and no browser analytics
  • Still depends on Chromium/Blink
  • Smaller team than Brave and no built-in sync
  • Desktop-focused and younger project
#4

ego lite

Chromium-based browser where AI agents share your logged-in sessions.

ego lite is a Chromium-based browser that lets AI agents and humans share the same browser instance, so agents use your existing cookies and logged-in sessions instead of a separate headless browser. It offers isolated workspaces for agent tasks, parallel execution, batch JavaScript actions, semantic snapshots, and Chrome profile migration. It runs on macOS today, with Windows in closed beta and Linux planned.

16.8K898MITDesktop browser

Pricing: Free and open source.

  • Agents reuse your logged-in sessions without re-authentication
  • Isolated workspaces and parallel task execution
  • MIT license
  • macOS only for now; Windows is in closed beta and Linux is on the roadmap
  • Giving agents access to your sessions needs careful trust and permissions
#5

Waterfox

Firefox-based privacy browser for power users

MPL-2.0 Firefox fork that removes Mozilla telemetry and experiments and adds native ad blocking, tree-style tabs, private containers, HTTPS-first behavior, and privacy-focused DNS handling. Available on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.

6.3K432MPL-2.0Desktop / Android

Pricing: Free and open source browser.

  • Firefox engine and extension compatibility without telemetry
  • Native ad blocking, tree-style tabs, and private containers

  • Smaller community and development team than Firefox or Brave
  • Web compatibility can sometimes favor Chromium
  • Custom features increase divergence from upstream Firefox
#6

LibreWolf

Hardened Firefox fork with strong privacy defaults

MPL-2.0 Firefox-based browser that removes telemetry, experiments, sponsored content, and many Mozilla services while applying stronger privacy and security settings. Includes uBlock Origin and fingerprinting protections. Primary development is on Codeberg; the GitHub source/index repository is not the canonical project home.

1.3K94MPL-2.0Desktop browser

Pricing: Free and open source community browser; primary development on Codeberg.

  • Firefox engine with no telemetry or sponsored content
  • uBlock Origin and stronger fingerprinting protections included

#7

Flow

Chromium browser organized around spaces and productivity

GPL-3.0 Chromium/Blink browser with profiles, spaces, command palette, sidebar navigation, and Chrome extension compatibility. Focuses on workspace organization more than privacy infrastructure; recent development activity is lower than Zen or Helium.

1.1K62GPL-3.0Desktop browser

Pricing: Open-source desktop browser; verify current project activity.

  • Chromium and Chrome extension compatibility
  • Profiles, spaces, command palette, and sidebar navigation
  • Modern interface with productivity-focused organization
