How we chose these Basecamp alternatives

We looked for open-source tools that overlap with Basecamp's core: organizing projects, to-dos, and team communication in one place. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, and self-hosting in its repository. Basecamp is a flat, opinionated tool, so the list mixes simple boards and full suites, and we flag fair-source, open-core, and inactive projects. See our methodology for the full criteria.

Important: licenses vary widely

Wekan, Kaneo, and Kanba are MIT and Operately is Apache-2.0, but Planka uses the PLANKA Fair Use License and Fizzy uses a fair-source, O'Saasy-style license, so both are not standard open source. Huly is EPL-2.0, Plane, Leantime, and Worklenz are AGPL-3.0 with paid editions, and OpenProject is GPL-3.0 with some security features in its Enterprise edition.

Closest to Basecamp

Plane and Huly are the closest modern all-rounders, combining projects, docs, and communication, with Plane adding AI agents and Huly adding chat and a virtual office. Leantime and OpenProject cover structured project management, and Fizzy, Wekan, Planka, and Kaneo focus on simple Kanban boards.

Inactive and very small projects

Orgnise's last commit was in July 2025, so it appears inactive, and Manage has only about 70 stars. Operately, Windshift, Ever Teams, and Kanba are young or small, so check their maturity first.

License details

Wekan, Kaneo, and Kanba are MIT, OpenProject is GPL-3.0, Redmine is GPL-2.0, Taiga is MPL-2.0, Operately is Apache-2.0, and Huly is EPL-2.0. Plane, Leantime's core, Worklenz, Ever Teams, Windshift, Orgnise, and Manage are AGPL-3.0, and Planka and Fizzy use fair-source licenses.

Maintenance status

Most projects had commits within days of this update. Kanba's last commit was in August 2026 and Orgnise's in July 2025.

Why look for a Basecamp alternative?

Basecamp is a proprietary hosted service with per-seat or flat-fee pricing, a fixed feature set, and data stored on its servers. Open-source alternatives let you self-host project data, add views such as Kanban and Gantt, avoid per-seat pricing, and customize workflows, at the cost of running the software and, for some, a less opinionated and simple experience.
