How we chose these BetterStack alternatives

We looked for open-source tools that overlap with BetterStack's core: uptime monitoring, status pages, incident alerts, and log or error visibility. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, and self-hosting in its repository. BetterStack is an all-in-one hosted product, so the list mixes uptime monitors, status pages, error trackers, and full observability stacks, and we flag source-available, open-core, and inactive projects. See our methodology for the full criteria.

Important: a self-hosted monitor shares your failure domain

If you host your monitoring on the same infrastructure as the sites you monitor, an outage can take both down. Run the monitor on separate infrastructure. Uptime Kuma and several others also lack built-in probing from multiple global locations, which BetterStack provides.

Different kinds of tools

Uptime Kuma, Gatus, Checkmate, Peekaping, Kener, and EasyMonitor are uptime monitors with status pages. Cachet, OpenStatus, and Statusnook focus on status pages, Sentry and Highlight track errors, and HyperDX, Uptrace, and OneUptime are broader observability platforms. Healthchecks watches cron jobs with heartbeat pings, and Keep centralizes alerts.

Important: source-available and open-core licenses

Sentry uses the Functional Source License (FSL-1.1-Apache-2.0), and Cachet uses its own license that forbids distributing it as a standalone product. StatusScout uses a source-available license that restricts reselling it as a hosted service. Keep, OneUptime, and Highlight keep enterprise code in separate directories, and Checkmate uses AGPL-3.0 with a modified Section 7.

License details

Uptime Kuma, HyperDX, Kener, Peekaping, EasyMonitor, and Statusnook are MIT. Gatus and Tianji are Apache-2.0, Healthchecks is BSD-3-Clause, and OpenStatus and Uptrace are AGPL-3.0.

Maintenance status

Most projects had commits within days of this update. Peekaping's last commit was in May 2026, and Statusnook has had no commits since October 2024, so it is inactive.

Why look for a BetterStack alternative?

BetterStack is a proprietary hosted service priced by monitors, team members, and data volume, with monitoring and incident data stored on its platform. Open-source alternatives let you self-host monitoring, avoid per-monitor and per-seat pricing, and keep logs and uptime data on your own infrastructure, at the cost of running the monitoring system yourself and losing built-in multi-region probes in some tools.
