How we chose these BoltAI alternatives

We looked for open-source tools that overlap with BoltAI's core: a single app to chat with many AI models using your own API keys or local models. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, and platforms in its repository. BoltAI is a native macOS app, so we note which alternatives run on the desktop and which are self-hosted web apps, and flag source-available licenses and slower projects. See our methodology for the full criteria.

Important: you bring your own models and keys

Like BoltAI, none of these includes model access. You connect your own API keys from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google, or run local models, and you pay those providers directly. Local inference needs reasonably powerful hardware.

Closest to BoltAI

Cherry Studio, Jan, and 5ire are desktop clients that connect to many providers, which is the closest to BoltAI's model. Cherry Studio supports 300+ models from 50+ providers with a local knowledge base, and Jan runs open models locally or connects to cloud providers. None is a native macOS app that integrates into every app the way BoltAI does.

Self-hosted web apps

Open WebUI and LibreChat are web interfaces you host yourself, with accounts and multi-user access, and AnythingLLM is available as a desktop or self-hosted app for chatting with documents. LobeChat adds teams of agents for ongoing work.

Important: several licenses are not standard open source

Open WebUI uses its own Open WebUI License, a BSD-3-Clause-based license with a branding requirement. LobeChat uses the LobeHub Community License and 5ire a modified Apache-2.0 license, both source available. Cherry Studio's Community Edition is AGPL-3.0, with a separate commercial license.

Maintenance status

Open WebUI, LobeChat, AnythingLLM, Cherry Studio, LibreChat, and Jan were updated within days of this update. 5ire's last commit was in September 2026, and Fullmoon's in May 2025, so Fullmoon has effectively stalled.

Why look for a BoltAI alternative?

BoltAI is a proprietary macOS app sold as a paid license, with updates and features tied to its developer and no Windows or Linux version. Open-source alternatives are free, run on more platforms, let you inspect the code and keep chats local, and avoid a paid license, at the cost of a less native macOS experience and the need to bring your own API keys.
