5 Best Open Source Cloudflare R2 Alternatives in 2026

Looking for an open source Cloudflare R2 alternative? We compared 5 open source object storage systems by license, S3 compatibility, scaling, maintenance, and self-hosting. They range from single-node S3 servers to distributed clusters and an embedded storage engine, and the best known one, MinIO, is now archived.

How we chose these Cloudflare R2 alternatives

We looked for open-source tools that overlap with Cloudflare R2's core: storing objects behind an S3-compatible API. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, and deployment in its repository. R2 is a hosted service with no egress fees, so we separate S3 servers you run yourself from distributed networks and storage engines, and we flag archived and beta projects. See our methodology for the full criteria.

Important: MinIO's Community repository is archived

MinIO's public repository is archived and marked as no longer maintained, with its last release in October 2025 and its last commit in April 2026. MinIO Inc. now points users to AIStor, a commercial product with a free edition. The code remains AGPL-3.0, but you should not start a new deployment on an unmaintained server without a plan for security fixes.

Closest to R2

MinIO, Alarik, and Ceph can serve an S3-compatible API like R2. Ceph is the most proven at large scale and also offers block and file storage, but it is complex to operate. Alarik is a much lighter option for single nodes and small clusters, though it is a young project and still in beta.

Different kinds of storage

SlateDB is not an S3 server: it is an embedded storage engine that uses object storage as its backing store, with a single-writer model. Storj is a decentralized network that stores encrypted pieces of files across independent nodes, offered as a paid cloud service, and its open-source code is AGPL-3.0.

License details

MinIO and Storj are AGPL-3.0, and Ceph is dual-licensed under LGPL-2.1 or LGPL-3.0. SlateDB and Alarik are Apache-2.0.

Egress and cost

R2's main advantage is zero egress fees. When you self-host, you pay for hardware, power, and bandwidth instead, so compare total costs. For public downloads at scale, you may still want a CDN in front of your storage.

Maintenance status

Ceph, SlateDB, Storj, and Alarik were updated within weeks of this update. MinIO is archived. Alarik is in beta and runs on Linux only, so test it carefully before using it for important data.

Why look for a Cloudflare R2 alternative?

Cloudflare R2 is a proprietary hosted service. It has no egress fees, but storage and operations are billed, and your data depends on Cloudflare's platform. Open-source alternatives let you run object storage on your own hardware or any cloud, control where data lives, and avoid per-operation pricing, at the cost of running, scaling, and securing the storage yourself, and paying for your own bandwidth.

#1

MinIO

Historically popular S3-compatible object storage

High-performance S3-compatible object storage with erasure coding, versioning, object locking, encryption, replication, and AWS SDK compatibility. The public Community server repository remains AGPL-3.0 but was archived in 2026 and is no longer actively maintained; MinIO Inc. now focuses commercially on AIStor.

61.3K8.1KAGPL-3.0 (archived)Self-hosted

Pricing: Community server source remains available under AGPL-3.0; commercial AIStor is a separate offering.

  • Strong S3 API compatibility and AWS SDK support
  • Historically mature with high performance
  • Erasure coding, versioning, locking, encryption, and replication
  • Community server repository archived in 2026
  • No longer actively maintained
  • New deployments should assess long-term maintenance and AGPL terms
#2

Ceph

Large-scale distributed object, block, and file storage

Distributed storage platform whose RADOS Gateway exposes S3-compatible and Swift-compatible APIs. Ceph also provides block storage and CephFS for private clouds, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and on-premises clusters.

17.1K6.5KLGPL-2.1 or LGPL-3.0 (dual)Self-hosted

Pricing: Open-source self-hosted platform; infrastructure and operations are your responsibility.

  • Object storage through S3-compatible RGW
  • Block storage and distributed filesystem
  • Scales with replication, erasure coding, and self-healing
  • Significant operational expertise required
  • Multiple daemons and cluster components
  • Overkill and costly to operate for small deployments
#3

SlateDB

Embedded Rust storage engine built on object storage

Apache-2.0 embedded LSM-tree storage engine that uses an object store such as Amazon S3 as its durable storage layer. It enables database-style systems without managing local persistent disks, but is not an S3 server or S3 replacement.

3.5K308Apache-2.0Embedded library

Pricing: Open-source embedded library; an underlying object store is required.

  • Apache-2.0 and written in Rust
  • Object-store-native LSM-tree architecture
  • Embedded library with multiple-reader support and no local persistent disk requirement
  • Not an S3 server and does not replace S3
  • Requires an underlying object store
  • Narrow use case aimed primarily at database developers
#4

Storj

Decentralized encrypted object-storage network

Open-source decentralized storage network that encrypts data, splits it into pieces, and distributes it across independent storage nodes. Applications can use S3-compatible access through a gateway; the storage network is a commercial hosted service.

3.3K429AGPL-3.0Distributed network

Pricing: Commercial hosted storage network with open-source core components.

  • Decentralized architecture with client-side encryption
  • Geographic distribution and S3-compatible gateway
  • Useful for backups and large objects without a single storage location
  • Not a conventional self-hosted S3 server
  • Depends on Storj network model and commercial service
  • Different latency and performance characteristics
#5

Alarik

Newer Apache-2.0 S3-compatible object store

Swift-based S3-compatible object-storage system with web console, versioning, multipart uploads, bucket policies, lifecycle rules, webhooks, replication, and distributed erasure coding. It can start as a simpler deployment and scale into a cluster.

5567Apache-2.0Self-hosted

Pricing: Free and open source under Apache-2.0; self-hosted.

  • Permissive Apache-2.0 license and S3-compatible API
  • Console, multipart upload, presigned URLs, versioning, and policies
  • Lifecycle rules, webhooks, replication, and erasure coding
  • Much younger than Ceph or MinIO
  • Small contributor community and fewer production deployments
  • API compatibility and large-scale operation are less battle-tested

Which one should you choose?

Need object, block, and file storage at scale

Ceph provides unified storage from one cluster on commodity hardware, but it is complex to run.

Ceph

Want a lightweight S3-compatible server

Alarik is Apache-2.0 and scales from one node to sharded clusters, but it is beta software and Linux only.

Alarik

Want decentralized, encrypted storage

Storj spreads encrypted file pieces across independent nodes, as a paid service or with its AGPL-3.0 code.

Storj

Building a database on object storage

SlateDB is an Apache-2.0 embedded engine with a single writer and multiple readers, not an S3 server.

Already run MinIO

MinIO's repository is archived, so plan a migration or move to the commercial AIStor edition.
