How we chose these CodeGPT alternatives

We looked for open-source AI coding tools that overlap with CodeGPT: chat, code generation, editing, and agents inside your development environment. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, and self-hosting in its repository. CodeGPT is an IDE-based assistant that works with many models, so we compare the alternatives by where they run and how autonomous they are. See our methodology for the full criteria.

Important: different levels of autonomy

Tabby is a completion assistant, Aider and Cline are interactive pair programmers, and OpenCode, Kilo, Grok Build, and Forgecode are full coding agents. OpenHands and SWE-agent are the most autonomous: they plan, edit, run commands, and open pull requests with little supervision, so they need sandboxing and review.

Where each one runs

Cline and Kilo run inside VS Code, and Kilo also supports JetBrains. OpenCode works in the terminal, desktop, and IDEs. Aider, Grok Build, and Forgecode are terminal-first, and OpenHands offers a web UI, CLI, and SDK. Tabby integrates into editors and runs as a self-hosted server.

Model choice and privacy

OpenCode, Cline, Kilo, Aider, and Forgecode work with many providers using your own keys, and several support local models, so code does not have to go to one vendor. Grok Build is built around Grok models. Tabby and local-model setups keep code entirely on your own infrastructure.

License details

OpenCode, OpenHands, Kilo, and SWE-agent are MIT, and Cline, Aider, Grok Build, Forgecode, and Tabby's core are Apache-2.0. Tabby and OpenHands have enterprise features under separate licenses.

Why look for a CodeGPT alternative?

CodeGPT is a proprietary assistant that sells access to AI models through its own plans and stores usage on its platform. Open-source alternatives let you inspect the code, bring your own API keys or local models, run agents in your terminal or CI, and avoid per-seat pricing, at the cost of configuring providers yourself and paying model usage directly.
