How we chose these Contentful alternatives

We looked for open-source tools that manage structured content and expose it through APIs like Contentful. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, and self-hosting in its repository, and flag licenses that are not standard open source. See our methodology for the full criteria.

Closest to Contentful

Strapi is the most popular headless CMS, with generated REST and GraphQL APIs and a visual content builder. Payload is a developer-first TypeScript CMS with drafts, versions, and localization, and Directus wraps an existing SQL database with an API and granular permissions.

Git-based and framework options

TinaCMS edits Git-based content visually, KeystoneJS generates a GraphQL API from a schema, and Statamic is a flat-file CMS with no database. Twill is a Laravel admin toolkit with a block editor, and Webiny is a serverless CMS with a page builder.

Traditional CMS

WordPress has the largest plugin ecosystem, Drupal is modular for complex sites, and Craft CMS is content-first with a GraphQL API. Vvveb is a CMS with a drag-and-drop builder, and Builder combines visual editing with a headless CMS.

Important: custom and source-available licenses

Directus uses its own custom license (MSCL-1.0), Statamic and Craft CMS use their own licenses, and Builder's SDKs are MIT while the hosted platform is proprietary. Strapi and Webiny keep enterprise features in ee directories.

License details

Payload, KeystoneJS, and Builder's SDKs are MIT. TinaCMS is Apache-2.0. WordPress is GPL-2.0 or later and Drupal is GPL-2.0 or later. Vvveb and Marble are AGPL-3.0. Twill's code is Apache-2.0.

Maintenance status

All 14 had commits within days or weeks of this update.

Why look for a Contentful alternative?

Contentful is a proprietary SaaS priced by users, records, and API calls, with content stored on its servers. Open-source CMS platforms can be self-hosted and have no per-record pricing, but you operate the infrastructure and lose Contentful's managed global delivery.
