How we chose these Datadog alternatives

We looked for open-source tools that cover parts of Datadog's platform: infrastructure and application monitoring, logs, traces, error tracking, uptime, and incident response. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, and self-hosting in its repository. Datadog is a broad SaaS suite, so we group alternatives by function and flag licenses that are source available or open core. See our methodology for the full criteria.

Important: no single tool replaces all of Datadog

Datadog bundles infrastructure monitoring, APM, logs, RUM, error tracking, synthetics, security, and incident management. Open-source options usually cover one or a few of these, so teams combine tools such as Prometheus with Grafana, Loki, and OpenTelemetry, or choose an all-in-one platform such as SigNoz, OpenObserve, Uptrace, or HyperDX.

All-in-one observability platforms

SigNoz, OpenObserve, HyperDX, Uptrace, Maple, Apache SkyWalking, and Gigapipe combine logs, metrics, and traces, mostly built on OpenTelemetry and columnar or ClickHouse storage. They are the closest to Datadog's unified experience and typically cost far less to run.

Metrics, logs, and pipelines

Prometheus and VictoriaMetrics store metrics, Grafana visualizes them, and Loki handles logs. Vector and Logstash collect, transform, and route telemetry. GreptimeDB is a database for metrics, logs, and traces, and Netdata offers zero-configuration real-time monitoring.

Error tracking, uptime, and status pages

Sentry, GlitchTip, Bugsink, and Highlight track errors, with GlitchTip and Bugsink compatible with Sentry SDKs. OneUptime, OpenStatus, Kener, Statusnook, and Tianji cover uptime monitoring and status pages, and Zabbix, Checkmk, Icinga, and Nagios are traditional infrastructure monitors. Helicone and OpenLLMetry monitor LLM applications, and Wachd manages alerts with AI root cause analysis.

Important licensing caveats

Sentry uses the Functional Source License (FSL-1.1-Apache-2.0), Maple uses FSL-1.1, and Bugsink uses the PolyForm Shield License, so all three are source available. SigNoz, OneUptime, and Highlight are open core, with enterprise directories under separate licenses. Logstash is Apache-2.0 outside its x-pack folder, which is under the Elastic License. Pydantic Logfire's SDK is open source, but its server is closed source.

Maintenance status

Statusnook has had no commits since October 2024, and Highlight's last commit was in August 2026. Most others, including Grafana, Prometheus, SigNoz, OpenObserve, Netdata, and Zabbix, were updated within days of this update.

Why look for a Datadog alternative?

Datadog is a proprietary SaaS platform priced by hosts, ingested data, and add-on products, which can become expensive at scale, with telemetry stored on its servers. Open-source alternatives let you self-host, control retention and costs, use open standards such as OpenTelemetry and Prometheus, and avoid vendor lock-in, at the cost of assembling and operating the stack yourself.
