How we chose these ElasticSearch alternatives

We looked for open-source systems that cover what Elasticsearch is used for: application search, log and observability data, and vector search. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, and self-hosting in its repository, and flag the entries that complement Elasticsearch rather than replace it. See our methodology for the full criteria.

Closest to Elasticsearch

OpenSearch is an Apache-2.0 fork now under the Linux Foundation, with similar APIs and vector search. Manticore Search offers full-text, vector, and SQL search with lower resource use.

App and site search

Meilisearch and Typesense are fast, typo-tolerant search engines that are easy to set up. Orama runs in the browser or at the edge, and SeekStorm is a Rust engine available as a library or server.

Logs and observability

Grafana Loki indexes labels instead of full text to reduce storage cost. Quickwit separates compute from storage for logs and traces, OpenObserve covers logs, metrics, and traces, and Gigapipe is an observability platform built on ClickHouse and DuckDB. Logstash is a data pipeline that complements Elasticsearch rather than replacing it.

Vector and enterprise search

Milvus, Qdrant, and Chroma are vector databases, and HelixDB combines graph and vector search. Onyx and Swirl search across company apps, and Apache Pinot is an OLAP store for sub-second queries on streaming data.

Important: licenses to check

Meilisearch is MIT with BUSL-1.1 Enterprise parts, and Onyx is MIT with enterprise-licensed directories. Typesense and Manticore are GPL, and Loki, OpenObserve, and Gigapipe are AGPL-3.0. Logstash is Apache-2.0 with X-Pack parts under the Elastic License.

Maintenance status

All 18 had commits within days or weeks of this update. Swirl's last commit was in September 2026.

Why look for a ElasticSearch alternative?

Elasticsearch is a heavy system to run, and its license history moved from Apache-2.0 to the Elastic License and SSPL in 2021 before AGPL-3.0 was added as an option in 2024. Some teams prefer lighter or more specialized engines, or a fork with a permissive license, depending on whether they search content, store logs, or serve vector queries.
