How we chose these Emergent alternatives

We looked for open-source tools that overlap with Emergent's core: turning prompts into working full-stack applications. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, and how it runs in its repository. Only two projects fit well, and they work differently: Dyad is an AI builder you run on your own machine, while Reflex is a framework with an AI builder on the side. See our methodology for the full criteria.

Important: two different approaches

Dyad is a desktop AI app builder: you describe an app, and it generates and edits the code on your computer using the model you choose. Reflex is a Python framework for writing full-stack web apps without JavaScript, and its separate AI Builder generates Reflex apps from prompts. Dyad is closer to Emergent's workflow, while Reflex is closer to a framework you code in.

Important: Dyad has a source-available Pro folder

Dyad's code is Apache-2.0 except the src/pro directory, which is under the Functional Source License 1.1 with an Apache 2.0 future license. That means its Pro features are source available rather than standard open source, so check the terms if you build on them.

Privacy and model choice

Dyad runs locally, so your code stays on your machine, and it works with many AI models, including local ones through tools such as Ollama. Reflex apps run wherever you deploy them. Its AI Builder is a hosted service that sends your prompts to Reflex's cloud, so use the open-source framework alone if you need fully local generation.

License details

Reflex is licensed under Apache-2.0. Dyad is Apache-2.0 outside src/pro, with src/pro under the FSL 1.1 Apache 2.0 license.

Why look for a Emergent alternative?

Emergent is a proprietary hosted service: prompts and generated code go through its cloud, usage is billed by credits, and your projects depend on its platform. Open-source alternatives let you run the builder locally, choose your own AI models, keep the code on your machine, and avoid credit pricing, at the cost of setup, your own model costs, and less hand-holding.

#1

Reflex

Open-source full-stack Python framework with an AI app builder.

Reflex combines an Apache-2.0 full-stack Python framework with Reflex Build, an AI-assisted browser workflow for prompts, live previews, code editing, testing, integrations, Git, and deployment. Generated applications remain standard editable Reflex source code.

28.9K1.8KApache-2.0Self-hosted

Pricing: Open-source Apache-2.0 framework; managed builder, hosting, and enterprise functionality may be commercial.

  • Apache-2.0 open-source framework
  • Full-stack applications in Python with editable generated source
  • AI prompt-to-app builder, live preview, testing, Git, and deployment tooling
  • Uses the Reflex framework rather than standard React architecture
  • Less suitable if you specifically want a JavaScript or TypeScript stack
  • Different ecosystem from Lovable's common React and Supabase workflows
#2

Dyad

Local AI app builder with bring-your-own-model support.

Dyad is a local AI app builder designed as an alternative to Lovable, Bolt, and v0. It runs on your own computer, generates and modifies applications through natural-language prompts, and supports your own AI providers and API keys.

21.7K2.7KApache-2.0 core; Functional Source License 1.1 Apache 2.0 Pro

Pricing: Open-core model: the core is Apache-2.0, while Pro functionality uses a separate fair-source license; model-provider costs may apply.

  • Runs locally with no mandatory account
  • Bring your own AI API keys and support multiple providers
  • Generated code stays under your control with an active community
  • Pro functionality uses a separate fair-source license
  • Requires your own model/API setup for many workflows
  • Less integrated hosting than Lovable and desktop-first rather than browser-first

Which one should you choose?

Want a local AI app builder that keeps code private

Dyad runs on your machine with the AI model you choose, but its src/pro features are source available under the FSL.
