Important: editors, not full IDEs
Zed, Neovim, CodeEdit, and Athas are editors that rely on language servers for intelligence. They do not replicate JetBrains' deep per-language refactoring, inspections, and framework tooling, so developers who rely on those features may still prefer a JetBrains IDE for large projects.
Closest to JetBrains
Zed is the closest: a fast editor in Rust with real-time collaboration, native Git, a debugger, and AI features such as parallel agents and edit prediction, and the AI features rely on model providers you connect yourself. Neovim is a modernized Vim fork with Lua configuration, a built-in LSP client, and Tree-sitter, aimed at terminal power users comfortable with modal editing.
Lightweight options
CodeEdit is a lightweight native editor written in Swift for macOS, meant to supplement Xcode for non-Apple projects, and it runs only on macOS. Athas is an AGPL-3.0 editor combining a code editor, integrated terminal, Git, and GitHub access, with a built-in agent and support for several third-party coding agents, as a minimal alternative to heavier AI editors.
License details
Zed is primarily GPL-3.0-or-later with Apache-2.0 components, Neovim is Apache-2.0, CodeEdit is MIT, and Athas is AGPL-3.0.
Maintenance status
Zed, Neovim, and Athas had commits within days of this update. CodeEdit's last commit was in August 2026, and Athas is young with about 3,100 stars.
