How we chose these Kiro alternatives

We grouped these projects into AI coding agent orchestrators, general-purpose editors, and AI coding assistants, then checked each project's license, AI agent support, supported platforms, and self-hosting options. Roomote is described as source-available with restrictions on competing commercial products, so we left it out of this open-source list. See our methodology for the full criteria.

The important distinction

Not all of these projects are direct replacements for Kiro. Some replace the editor, some replace the AI coding agent, and others provide an orchestration layer around existing agents. Pick the category first, then the tool.

Agentic environments vs AI-native editors

Orca, Superset, Emdash, Jean, and Synara run several agents in parallel, usually in isolated Git worktrees. Zed, Athas, and CodeEdit are editors, with AI ranging from deeply integrated (Zed) to minimal (CodeEdit). Aider, Kilo, and Tabby are coding agents or assistants that plug into your existing editor or terminal.

Licensing caveats

Licenses vary: MIT (Orca, Kilo, T3 Code, CodeEdit, Synara), Apache-2.0 (Aider, Tabby core, Paseo, Jean, Emdash, Agno), GPL-3.0 (Zed), and AGPL-3.0 (Athas). Superset is source available under Elastic License 2.0 rather than standard open source. Check each repository's current license before adopting.

Why look for a Kiro alternative?

Kiro is an agentic development environment designed to help developers ship software with AI agents. The open-source alternatives take several different approaches: some are complete code editors, others orchestrate multiple coding agents, while tools such as Aider operate directly from the terminal.
