How we chose these MongoDB alternatives

We looked for open-source databases that cover use cases people choose MongoDB for: scalable application data, flexible schemas, and real-time apps. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, and self-hosting in its repository. MongoDB is a document database under the Server Side Public License, which is not OSI-approved open source, but most alternatives here use different data models, so we explain what each is best at and where migration needs rework. See our methodology for the full criteria.

Important: these are not drop-in MongoDB replacements

None of these is a MongoDB-compatible document database. TiDB and OceanBase are distributed SQL databases, Turso is SQLite-compatible, Convex and Instant are reactive backends, Memgraph is a graph database, Deep Lake stores AI data, and SlateDB is an embedded storage engine. Moving from MongoDB means remodeling data and rewriting queries.

Which one for which job

TiDB and OceanBase suit large-scale transactional and analytical workloads with MySQL-compatible access. Turso suits multi-tenant and on-device apps built on SQLite. Convex and Instant give web and mobile apps real-time queries, auth, and sync. Memgraph fits graph workloads such as fraud detection, Deep Lake fits ML data, and SlateDB is a building block for cloud-native systems.

License details

TiDB, OceanBase, Instant, SlateDB, and Deep Lake are Apache-2.0, and Turso and libSQL are MIT. Convex's backend is source available under the Functional Source License (FSL-1.1-Apache-2.0), and Memgraph is source available under the Business Source License 1.1 with a separate Enterprise License for some features.

Self-hosting

Convex and Instant can be self-hosted despite also being managed platforms: Convex documents a self-hosting guide, and Instant's repository is open source under Apache-2.0. TiDB, OceanBase, Memgraph, Turso, Deep Lake, and SlateDB can run on your own infrastructure.

Maintenance status

All eight projects were updated within days or weeks of this update, with Deep Lake's last commit in May 2026.

Why look for a MongoDB alternative?

MongoDB is a document database whose server uses the Server Side Public License, so it is source available rather than open source, with a managed cloud service (Atlas) that drives much of its pricing. Teams look for open-source alternatives for permissive licenses, SQL compatibility, stronger consistency, real-time sync, or specialized workloads such as graphs and AI data, at the cost of changing the data model and application code.

#1

TiDB

Distributed SQL database for transactional and analytical workloads.

TiDB is a distributed SQL database combining OLTP and OLAP with horizontal scalability, high availability, strong consistency, MySQL compatibility, and a cloud-native architecture, for large-scale e-commerce, financial services, and IoT data.

40.6K6.3KApache-2.0Self-hosted

Pricing: Free open source; managed TiDB Cloud is paid.

  • Horizontal scalability with strong consistency
  • MySQL compatibility
  • Combined transactional and analytical processing
  • Relational model, so migrating from MongoDB needs remodeling
  • More complex to operate than a single node database
#2

Turso

SQLite-compatible database written in Rust.

Turso is a Rust SQL database that is SQLite-compatible, with libSQL, an open-contribution fork of SQLite, powering its managed platform. It supports multi-tenant applications with many databases, on-device use, vector search, and encryption.

24.5K1.4KMITSelf-hosted

Pricing: Free and open source; the Turso cloud platform has paid plans.

  • SQLite compatibility with a modern Rust engine
  • Good for multi-tenant, mobile, and on-device apps
  • MIT license
  • Relational rather than document model
  • Newer engine still maturing
#3

Convex

Open-source reactive database for app developers.

Convex is a reactive database and backend for web and mobile apps with end-to-end TypeScript, reactive queries, built-in authentication, scheduled functions, and AI tooling. The backend is source available under the Functional Source License (FSL-1.1-Apache-2.0), which converts to Apache-2.0 after two years, and it can be self-hosted or used as a managed platform.

12.6K824FSL-1.1-Apache-2.0Self-hosted

Pricing: Free self-hosted; managed cloud plans are paid.

  • Reactive queries and end-to-end TypeScript
  • Auth, scheduling, and backend functions built in
  • Self-hosting guide available
  • Source available, not standard open source
  • Its own data and query model, with lock-in to its framework
#4

Instant

Realtime backend for multiplayer and collaborative applications.

Instant is an Apache-2.0 realtime backend with a reactive database, authentication, permissions, file storage, presence, streams, offline caching, optimistic updates, and relational queries.

10.5K415Apache-2.0Self-hosted

Pricing: Free and self-hostable under Apache-2.0; hosted services may be paid.

  • Realtime by default
  • Auth, permissions, storage, presence, and offline caching
  • Strong multiplayer model
  • Different data model from PostgreSQL
  • Younger ecosystem
  • Less suitable for traditional SQL-heavy apps
#5

OceanBase

Distributed relational database for massive scale.

OceanBase is a distributed relational database supporting OLTP, OLAP, and hybrid workloads with Multi-Paxos consensus, petabyte scalability, MySQL and Oracle protocol compatibility, real-time analytics, and multi-tenancy.

10.3K1.9KApache-2.0Self-hosted

Pricing: Free open source; commercial editions and cloud are paid.

  • Petabyte scalability with high availability
  • MySQL and Oracle compatibility
  • Apache-2.0 license
  • Complex deployment for small teams
  • Relational model, so migrating from MongoDB needs remodeling
#6

Deep Lake (Activeloop)

Database for AI data such as images, audio, and embeddings.

Deep Lake from Activeloop stores, queries, and versions complex AI data such as images, audio, and embeddings, with tensor storage, vector search, SQL-like querying, Git-like versioning, and streaming to ML frameworks.

9.2K726Apache-2.0Self-hosted

Pricing: Free and open source; managed cloud plans are paid.

  • Built for multimodal ML data and vector search
  • Versioning and streaming to ML frameworks
  • Apache-2.0 license
  • A specialized AI data store, not a general application database
  • Last commit in May 2026
#7

Memgraph

In-memory graph database with Neo4j compatibility.

Memgraph is a high-performance in-memory graph database with Neo4j compatibility, real-time analytics, and support for GraphRAG and AI use cases. Its source is available under the Business Source License 1.1, with some features under a separate Memgraph Enterprise License.

4.6K285BSL-1.1 + EnterpriseSelf-hosted

Pricing: Free Community edition; paid Enterprise and cloud.

  • Fast in-memory graph processing
  • Neo4j compatibility
  • Good for fraud detection and recommendations
  • Source available, not standard open source
  • Graph model, not a document store
#8

SlateDB

Embedded Rust storage engine built on object storage

Apache-2.0 embedded LSM-tree storage engine that uses an object store such as Amazon S3 as its durable storage layer. It enables database-style systems without managing local persistent disks, but is not an S3 server or S3 replacement.

3.5K308Apache-2.0Embedded library

Pricing: Open-source embedded library; an underlying object store is required.

  • Apache-2.0 and written in Rust
  • Object-store-native LSM-tree architecture
  • Embedded library with multiple-reader support and no local persistent disk requirement
  • Not an S3 server and does not replace S3
  • Requires an underlying object store
  • Narrow use case aimed primarily at database developers
