Alternatives / Navicat
Looking for an open source Navicat alternative? We compared 5 open source SQL clients by license, supported databases, AI features, and maintenance. Beekeeper Studio and DBeaver are the most mature, while Chat2DB, Tabularis, and Conar focus on AI-assisted querying.

| Alternative | Best for | License |
|---|---|---|
| Beekeeper Studio | Clean SQL client with team workspaces | GPL-3.0 Community Edition |
| DBeaver | Broadest driver and database support | Apache-2.0 Community Edition |
| Chat2DB | Natural-language SQL across databases | Custom Chat2DB License 5.3.0+ / historical Apache-2.0 |
| Tabularis | SQL workspace with MCP server and notebooks | Apache-2.0 |
| Conar | PostgreSQL management with AI filtering | AGPL-3.0 |
We looked for open-source desktop tools that cover Navicat's core: connecting to databases, browsing and editing data, writing SQL, and managing schemas. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, and supported databases in its repository, and flag paid editions. See our methodology for the full criteria.
DBeaver Community is the broadest: a cross-platform client with wide driver coverage for MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, MariaDB, and more. Beekeeper Studio has a cleaner interface with a spreadsheet-style editor, SSH tunneling, and an offline-first design.
Chat2DB converts natural language to SQL across many databases. Tabularis is a desktop SQL workspace with an MCP server, notebooks, and visual EXPLAIN, with AI assistance still experimental. Conar manages PostgreSQL only, with AI filtering and natural-language queries.
DBeaver's NoSQL, cloud connectors, and AI assistant require the commercial PRO edition. Beekeeper Studio's Community edition is GPL-3.0, with paid editions for extra features. Chat2DB moved to a custom license from version 5.3.0, while older versions were Apache-2.0.
DBeaver Community and Tabularis are Apache-2.0. Beekeeper Studio Community is GPL-3.0. Conar is AGPL-3.0. Chat2DB uses a custom license from 5.3.0.
All five had commits within days of this update. Conar is newer with about 1,450 stars.
Navicat is a proprietary desktop product sold per license or subscription, with separate editions for each database and higher prices for the full feature set. Open-source clients are free to use across many databases, but the most capable features of some, such as NoSQL support, sit in paid editions.
Apache-2.0 Community Edition database tool supporting relational systems through JDBC, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, SQL Server, Oracle, and DB2, plus community drivers. Includes SQL/data editors, ER diagrams, import/export, schema inspection, task automation, administration, and plugins; commercial editions add more NoSQL, cloud, AI, and enterprise functionality.
Pricing: Free Apache-2.0 Community Edition; commercial editions add database and enterprise features.
AI-focused database client and SQL workspace for more than 40 database systems, including SQL and NoSQL. Features text-to-SQL, query explanation and optimization, AI analysis, dashboards, CLI, MCP, visualization, web, Docker, and local-first desktop modes. Historical releases before 5.3.0 were Apache-2.0; Community 5.3.0+ uses a modified license with additional restrictions and is source available.
Pricing: Current source-available Community license; verify restrictions and commercial offerings before use.
GPL-3.0 Community Edition SQL editor and database manager focused on ease of use, supporting PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, SQL Server, CockroachDB, and other systems. Includes autocomplete, query history, data editing, import/export, backup/restore, SSH tunnels, SSL, and JSON viewing; paid features use commercial licensing.
Pricing: Community Edition with no account required; additional functionality is commercial.
Apache-2.0 desktop database workspace with PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB, and SQLite built in, plus plugins for SQL Server, DuckDB, ClickHouse, Redis, DynamoDB, and others. Includes SQL/Markdown notebooks, visual query builder and EXPLAIN, ER diagrams, schema editing, SSH/Kubernetes tunnels, local Ollama and hosted AI integrations, and an MCP server for agents.
Pricing: Open-source desktop application; supports local and external AI providers.
AGPL-3.0 database client for PostgreSQL, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and ClickHouse, with data browsing and editing, SQL, natural-language query generation and optimization, AI filtering, encrypted connections, and synchronized connection management. Repository and product references are undergoing a Conar/Tamery branding transition.
Pricing: Open-source project with cloud synchronization; verify current product branding and hosting model.
