How we chose these New Relic alternatives

We looked for open-source tools that collect metrics, traces, logs, and errors like New Relic. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, and self-hosting in its repository, and flag tools that cover only part of observability. See our methodology for the full criteria.

Full platforms

SigNoz unifies metrics, traces, and logs on OpenTelemetry. Grafana unifies metrics, logs, traces, and profiles. Apache SkyWalking traces and monitors applications with eBPF on Kubernetes. HyperDX unifies session replay, logs, traces, and metrics on ClickHouse, and Uptrace and Coroot are other OpenTelemetry and eBPF platforms.

Metrics and infrastructure

Netdata gives real-time monitoring with zero configuration. Prometheus is a CNCF metrics system, so it does not cover logs or traces. Checkmk and Icinga cover infrastructure monitoring, and GreptimeDB is a database for metrics, logs, and traces.

Errors and replay

Bugsink and GlitchTip are self-hosted error trackers compatible with Sentry SDKs. OpenReplay offers self-hosted session replay and product analytics.

Narrow scope

OpenLLMetry and Helicone cover LLM applications, Logfire targets Python and only its SDK is open, Elementary Data observes dbt pipelines, and ProjectDiscovery is a vulnerability scanner, not APM.

Important: licenses

Maple uses the Functional Source License (FSL-1.1), Bugsink uses PolyForm Shield, and Grafana, Uptrace, and OpenReplay are AGPL-3.0. SigNoz has enterprise directories.

Maintenance status

Most had commits within days or weeks of this update.

Why look for a New Relic alternative?

New Relic is a proprietary platform priced by data ingest and users, so costs grow with telemetry volume. Open-source stacks can be self-hosted at predictable cost, but you run storage and scaling.
