Important: gateways are not a model marketplace
OpenRouter sells access to many models with pooled credits and a single invoice. LiteLLM, Bifrost, and LLM Gateway proxy requests to providers you already have accounts with, so you manage provider keys and billing yourself. LLM Gateway also offers a hosted plan with a gateway fee for people who prefer a managed option.
What the gateways do
All three normalize requests to the OpenAI format, support many providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, and add usage analytics and cost tracking. LiteLLM and Bifrost add virtual keys with budgets, rate limits, load balancing, fallbacks, and guardrails, and Bifrost also includes an MCP gateway and claims much lower latency than LiteLLM.
License details
LiteLLM is MIT outside its enterprise directory, which is under a separate license and adds features such as SSO and audit logs. Bifrost is Apache-2.0. LLM Gateway is AGPL-3.0 outside its ee directory, which is under a commercial license, and multi-organization administration needs a white-label license.
Pricing
All three can be self-hosted for free. LiteLLM sells an enterprise tier and a hosted proxy, Bifrost offers a free enterprise trial, and LLM Gateway has a free plan with a 5 percent gateway fee, a Pro plan at $50 per month, and custom enterprise pricing.
Maintenance status
