How we chose these Pinecone alternatives

We looked for open-source databases that store embeddings and run similarity search like Pinecone. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, and self-hosting in its repository, and flag the entries that are not vector databases. See our methodology for the full criteria.

Closest to Pinecone

Qdrant is a Rust vector database with compression options and cloud-native scaling, and Milvus targets very large scale with Lite, Standalone, and distributed modes. Weaviate adds hybrid search and built-in model integrations, and Chroma is the simplest to start with.

Important: not all are vector databases

Mem0 is a memory layer for agents, Laminar is an observability platform, and Typesense is a search engine that added vector search. Activeloop's Deep Lake is aimed at ML data workflows, and HelixDB is a graph database with vector search.

Important: licenses

Weaviate is mostly BSD-3-Clause with parts under the Weaviate License. Typesense is GPL-3.0. Managed clouds from Milvus, Qdrant, Weaviate, and Chroma are paid.

License details

Mem0, Milvus, Qdrant, Chroma, Activeloop, HelixDB, and Laminar are Apache-2.0. Typesense is GPL-3.0. Weaviate is BSD-3-Clause plus the Weaviate License.

Maintenance status

All except Activeloop had commits within days of this update. Deep Lake's last commit was in May 2026.

Why look for a Pinecone alternative?

Pinecone is a proprietary managed service, so your embeddings live in its cloud and pricing grows with storage and queries. Open-source vector databases can run on your own infrastructure, avoid vendor lock-in, and be tuned for your workload, at the cost of operating the cluster.
