Looking for an open source TikTok alternative? We found one open source platform: Pixelfed, a federated photo-sharing network with chronological feeds and no ads. It is not a short-video app like TikTok, so it only partly replaces it.

We looked for open-source platforms that cover TikTok's core: posting media, following creators, and a feed to browse content. We verified the project's license, recent activity, stars, and self-hosting in its repository. Only one project met these criteria, and it centers on photos rather than short vertical video, so we explain what it does and does not replace. See our methodology for the full criteria.
Pixelfed is a decentralized photo-sharing platform similar to Instagram. It supports some video, but it is not a TikTok-style short-video app with an algorithmic For You feed, music library, and video effects. It replaces the sharing and following side, not the short-video experience.
Pixelfed uses ActivityPub, so accounts on different servers can follow each other and interact with other fediverse platforms such as Mastodon. It offers chronological feeds, privacy controls, and no ads or algorithmic ranking, and you can join an existing server or run your own.
Pixelfed is licensed under AGPL-3.0 and can be self-hosted. The project is funded by community support rather than advertising.
Pixelfed's repository was updated within days of this update and has about 7,100 stars, but the network is much smaller than TikTok's.
TikTok is a proprietary social network built around an algorithmic feed, with extensive data collection and a platform that decides what is seen and monetized.
