We looked for open-source tools that overlap with Toggl's core: tracking time against projects and clients and reporting on it. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, and self-hosting in its repository. Toggl is a hosted team product, so the list includes team trackers, personal and developer tools, and an all-in-one freelancer platform, and we flag restrictive licenses. Midday's AGPL-3.0 license applies only to non-commercial use, and commercial use or deployments with a setup fee require a commercial license from the company. That makes it source available for business purposes. Its invoicing features are also still in development.
solidtime and Kimai are the closest: team time trackers with projects, clients, billable rates, reports, and self-hosting. Kimai is the more mature, with budgets, invoicing, a REST API, and a plugin store with some paid plugins, while solidtime has a more modern interface.
Super Productivity combines a task manager with time tracking, Pomodoro sessions, and issue tracker integrations. Wakapi tracks coding activity automatically through editor plugins. TimeScribe is a local desktop app for macOS and Windows with automatic detection.

Super Productivity, solidtime, Kimai, Wakapi, and TimeScribe had commits within weeks of this update. Midday's last commit was in June 2026, so development is slower.
