How we chose these Tresorit alternatives

We looked for open-source tools that store and share files like Tresorit, with attention to encryption and self-hosting. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, and self-hosting in its repository. Not all of them offer end-to-end encryption by default. See our methodology for the full criteria.

Closest to Tresorit

Nextcloud is the most popular: file sync and sharing with real-time editing, chat, a calendar, and many apps. Seafile offers file sync with granular permissions and co-editing, and OpenCloud and ownCloud are self-hosted file platforms for organizations.

End-to-end encryption

Peergos is a peer-to-peer encrypted filesystem with offline access. Hoodik is a lightweight self-hosted encrypted store written in Rust and Vue. Ente encrypts photos and videos end to end, but it is focused on media, not general file sharing.

Other options

Filestash is a file manager across S3, SFTP, WebDAV, and more. Sync-in and Twake Drive are self-hosted storage and collaboration suites, Cozy imports data from other services, and Firefiles is a browser file manager over your own S3 storage.

Important: non-commercial license

Hoodik is under CC BY-NC 4.0, which forbids commercial use, so it is not open source in the usual sense. Filestash keeps its enterprise features in a paid version, and ownCloud is aimed at enterprise customers.

License details

Nextcloud, Ente, Filestash, Sync-in, Twake Drive, Firefiles, Cozy, and Peergos core are AGPL-3.0. Seafile's server is AGPL-3.0. OpenCloud and ownCloud are Apache-2.0 backends with AGPL-3.0 web components. Hoodik is CC BY-NC 4.0.

Maintenance status

Most had commits within days of this update. Firefiles' last commit was in November 2025.

Why look for a Tresorit alternative?

Tresorit is a proprietary service with end-to-end encryption, priced per user, where files sit in its cloud. Open-source platforms let you host storage yourself and audit the code, but end-to-end encryption is often optional or limited, and you run the server.
