How we chose these Wix alternatives

We looked for open-source tools that overlap with Wix's core: designing websites visually, managing content, and publishing without hand-coding everything. We verified each project's license, recent activity, stars, and self-hosting in its repository. Wix is an all-in-one hosted builder, so the list mixes visual builders, CMS platforms, and design tools, and we flag open-core and partly proprietary projects. See our methodology for the full criteria.

Important: few are all-in-one like Wix

Wix bundles templates, hosting, a domain, ecommerce, and a visual editor. Webstudio, Ycode, Plasmic, Silex, and Frappe Builder are visual builders, Builder, Webiny, and Drupal are CMS platforms, and Grida is a design canvas. None includes hosting and templates in one product, so expect to assemble hosting, a domain, and a CMS yourself.

Closest to Wix

Webstudio is the closest: a visual builder with full CSS control, a headless CMS connection, and hosting anywhere. Ycode adds a built-in CMS in a visual builder, and Frappe Builder offers drag-and-drop pages for teams already on the Frappe ecosystem.

Important: open core and partly proprietary

Builder's repository is MIT, but its hosted platform is proprietary. Webiny's Community Edition is MIT, while its Business and Enterprise editions are commercial. Plasmic's platform directory is AGPL-3.0, and Webstudio has a proprietary optional animation package. Ycode self-hosting needs your own Supabase and Vercel accounts.

Maintenance status

Most projects had commits within days of this update. Ycode is young and small.

Why look for a Wix alternative?

Wix is a proprietary hosted builder that locks your site to its platform, charges by plan for domains, storage, and features, and does not let you export a working site elsewhere. Open-source alternatives let you self-host, own your code and data, avoid plan limits, and move providers freely, at the cost of running hosting yourself and a less polished all-in-one experience.
