Novu Review

Open-source notification infrastructure for in-app, email, push, SMS, and chat

Last reviewed: October 2026

TL;DR

Novu is the open-source answer to notification platforms like Knock, Courier, and MagicBell: one API and workflow engine for in-app, email, push, SMS, and chat, with an embeddable Inbox component. Self-hosting is documented but needs real infrastructure, and some features are cloud or enterprise only.

What is Novu?

Novu is a notification infrastructure platform. You define a workflow once, then it delivers across channels through providers such as Twilio and Resend, handles per-user preferences, and batches events with a digest engine. A React, Next.js, and Remix Inbox component gives you a real-time in-app notification center without building one yourself.

Installation & self-hosting

The community self-hosting docs describe a single-VM setup with 4 vCPUs and 8 GB of RAM running the API, worker, WebSocket service, and dashboard, backed by MongoDB, Redis with append-only persistence, and 10 GB of S3-compatible storage. A multi-VM layout is recommended for production, with separate VMs for each service. Social login is not supported when self-hosting, so you sign in with email and password.

User experience

Workflows can be built in a visual editor or moved into code with the Novu framework, which suits developers who want notifications versioned alongside the app. The email editor is block-based and built on React Email, and the Inbox component supports preferences, snooze, and read and archive states. We did not run a self-hosted instance ourselves; this section reflects official documentation and product pages.

Key features

  • One API for in-app inbox, email, push, SMS, and chat
  • Visual workflow editor, with code-based workflows for runtime logic
  • Embeddable Inbox component for React, Next.js, and Remix
  • Digest engine that batches many events into one message
  • Block-based email editor built on React Email

What Novu does well

  • Large community: about 40,000 GitHub stars, 400+ contributors, and commits on the day of review
  • A ready-made Inbox component saves weeks compared with building a notification center
  • Cloud free tier includes every channel and both US and EU data residency

Where Novu falls short

  • The repository mixes MIT code with enterprise packages under a separate commercial license, so check what you use
  • Self-hosting is heavier than most tools, with MongoDB, Redis, and several services to run
  • Novu lists self-hosted deployment with SSO and RBAC as an Enterprise offering, and some cloud features are not in the community edition
  • Cloud free tier keeps feeds for only 24 hours and limits you to 3 team members

Pricing

The Cloud Free plan includes 10,000 workflow runs per month, 20 workflows, and 3 team members. Pro starts at $30/month for 30,000 runs, Team starts at $250/month for 250,000 runs, and overage is $1.20 per 1,000 runs. Enterprise is custom and adds SAML SSO, SCIM, and a HIPAA BAA.

Novu vs Knock

Knock, Courier, and MagicBell are hosted notification platforms. Novu offers the same building blocks, including workflows, preferences, an inbox, and multi-channel delivery, with an open-source core you can read and run. The trade-off is operations: with the hosted competitors you never run MongoDB or Redis, while Novu lets you do that if data control matters to you.

Best for

  • Product teams that want a notification center and multi-channel delivery without building it
  • Developers who prefer code-defined workflows that live in their repository
  • Companies that want an open-source option to start on the cloud and keep an exit path

Not ideal for

  • Teams that need SSO and RBAC on a self-hosted deployment without paying for Enterprise
  • Small apps that only send a few transactional emails, where a plain email API is enough
  • Teams that do not want to run MongoDB and Redis

Final verdict

Novu is the strongest open-source notification platform and a sensible pick if an in-app inbox plus multi-channel workflows are on your roadmap. Treat the cloud as the default and self-hosting as a deliberate infrastructure choice, and read the license split carefully before building on the enterprise packages.
