Odoo Review

A modular open-core business suite: CRM, accounting, inventory, ecommerce, HR, and more

Last reviewed: October 2026

TL;DR

Odoo is an integrated suite of business apps (CRM, sales, accounting, inventory, manufacturing, ecommerce, HR, POS, projects, marketing) that share one data layer on PostgreSQL. The Community edition is open source and self-hostable; the Enterprise edition adds apps and support for a per-user fee, and you can switch between editions at any time. It is a credible alternative to SAP, Salesforce, HubSpot, and Zoho for small and midsize businesses, but implementation effort is real.

What is Odoo?

The README describes Odoo as a suite of web-based open-source business apps: CRM, Website Builder, eCommerce, Warehouse Management, Project Management, Billing and Accounting, Point of Sale, Human Resources, Marketing, and Manufacturing, usable standalone or together as an ERP. OpenAlternative adds AI-assisted document processing and workflow automation, and says modules share one data layer so information entered in one app flows into the others, with a marketplace of over 40,000 apps. Data is stored in PostgreSQL, and Odoo can be hosted by Odoo or on your own servers. The repository includes addons, the core odoo package, setup, and packaging directories, plus an odoo-bin launcher and requirements.txt.

Installation & self-hosting

The README points to the online documentation for setup and lists no specific requirements. The source-install guide is organized as fetching the sources (archive or Git), preparing Python, PostgreSQL, and dependencies, and then running Odoo, but the page we could read did not include the version numbers, so check the master documentation for the exact Python and PostgreSQL versions. The Community edition can be self-hosted from this repository, while the pricing page lists Odoo Online (included in Standard and Custom), Odoo.sh (available with Custom, with hosting costs not included in the subscription), and on-premise (available with Custom, where you download Odoo Enterprise and host it yourself). Odoo's editions page says Community is the open-source core that Enterprise is built on and that you can switch between versions at any time, and its comparison covers unlimited functional support, version upgrades, hosting, a mobile app for Android and iOS, comprehensive accounting, and Odoo Studio, although the check marks did not survive in the text we read, so verify which features are Enterprise-only before you plan. Vulnerabilities are reported through Odoo's responsible disclosure by email.

User experience

The experience is one web interface with an app switcher and consistent patterns across modules, which is the point of the integrated design. Customization through Studio (on paid plans) and a developer ecosystem handles fit to business processes. We did not deploy Odoo; this section reflects the README, pricing page, editions page, and OpenAlternative.

Key features

  • Accounting and invoicing, CRM and sales, inventory and manufacturing
  • Ecommerce, website builder, point of sale, and marketing campaigns
  • HR and payroll, project management, and workflow automation
  • AI-assisted document processing and automation
  • One shared data layer on PostgreSQL across modules
  • Marketplace of third-party apps and a developer platform

What Odoo does well

  • Breadth: one suite replaces many separate tools, with integrated data
  • Free Community edition, several hosting options (including on-premise), and the ability to switch editions
  • Large community and ecosystem, with about 55,000 stars and 34,000 forks
  • Modular, so you can start with one app and add more

Where Odoo falls short

  • Open core: many apps and features, such as Studio and comprehensive accounting, are in Enterprise, and the editions page we read did not show which exactly
  • The free Odoo Online plan covers just one app, and full-suite pricing is per user
  • Implementation and customization typically need a partner or developer time
  • The README does not list system requirements or edition differences, and its license link did not name the license in the content we read
  • Odoo.sh hosting costs are not included in the subscription

Pricing

Odoo Online: One App Free is €0 for one app with unlimited users (multi-company and Studio are available on this plan according to the pricing page), Standard is €19.90 per user per month for all apps, and Custom is €35.90 per user per month with multi-company, Odoo Studio, agentic AI, and external API access, with an introductory discount for 12 months and light users at €7.90 per user per month on quote. Odoo.sh and on-premise hosting are available with Custom. The Community edition is free to self-host.

Odoo vs SAP

SAP is the enterprise ERP standard, with deep industry functionality and heavy implementations, while Salesforce, HubSpot, and Zoho focus on CRM and adjacent tools. Odoo covers CRM through accounting and manufacturing in one modular suite at a much lower cost and complexity, with an open-source core you can host yourself. It will not match SAP in very large, regulated enterprises, but for small and midsize companies it is a strong, flexible alternative.

Best for

  • Small and midsize businesses that want one integrated suite instead of many tools
  • Companies that want to start free and grow module by module
  • Teams with partners or developers to customize workflows

Not ideal for

  • Large enterprises with highly specialized ERP needs
  • Teams that want every app and feature in the free open-source edition
  • Businesses without capacity for implementation and training

Final verdict

Odoo is the most complete open-core business suite for small and midsize companies. Decide early which apps you need from Enterprise, budget for implementation, and compare the per-user cost with your current stack.
