Paperless-ngx Review
A community-run document management system that turns scanned paper into a searchable archive
Last reviewed: October 2026
TL;DR
Paperless-ngx is a GPL-3.0 document management system that ingests scans and PDFs, makes them searchable, and keeps an online archive so you can keep less paper. It is the official successor to Paperless and Paperless-ng, run by a team of maintainers, deployed most easily with docker compose, and available in many languages through community translation.

What is Paperless-ngx?
The README describes Paperless-ngx as a document management system that transforms physical documents into a searchable online archive. It is the official successor to the original Paperless and Paperless-ng projects, designed to distribute responsibility for advancing and supporting the project among a team of people rather than a single maintainer. A public demo exists with demo credentials and a warning that content resets and confidential data should not be uploaded. Features are listed in the documentation rather than in the README, and the project coordinates translations on Crowdin and takes feature requests through GitHub Discussions. A migration path from Paperless-ng is documented: the README says to drop in the new Docker image. The license is GPL-3.0.
Installation & self-hosting
The easiest path is docker compose: the repository's docker/compose directory has files that pull images from the GitHub container registry, and an install script configures a compose environment interactively (the README shows a bash command that downloads and runs it). Alternative installation methods and step-by-step guides are in the documentation at docs.paperless-ngx.com. Running a document archive means planning backups for both the database and the media folder. We did not install it.
User experience
The web interface lets you upload or consume documents from a watched folder, then search, tag, and organize them. The project's public demo is available to try the interface without setup. We have not run it ourselves.

What Paperless-ngx does well
- Well established in the self-hosting community, about 46,700 stars
- Team-run project rather than a single maintainer
- Easy container-based deployment
- Easy migration from Paperless-ng
Where Paperless-ngx falls short
- The README is short and defers feature details to the documentation
- Quality of results depends on your scans and the OCR pipeline
- You own backups and security for sensitive documents
- No official hosted version
Pricing
Paperless-ngx is free under the GPL-3.0 license, and the project accepts contributions and donations. There is no paid tier.
Paperless-ngx vs Evernote
Evernote and similar hosted services store scans and notes in a vendor cloud with paid tiers. Paperless-ngx is purpose-built for scanned documents and archival, runs on your own server, and keeps your paperwork private, but it is not a general-purpose note-taking app.

Final verdict
Paperless-ngx is the standard open-source answer to document digitization. Invest in your scanning workflow and backups, and it will pay off quickly.
