Probo Review

MIT-licensed GRC platform with a managed compliance-officer service on top

Last reviewed: October 2026

TL;DR

Probo is an open-source governance, risk, and compliance platform that you can self-host or buy as a service where a dedicated compliance officer runs the program for you. It covers SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, GDPR, NIS2, and DORA, and unusually for this category it exposes a GraphQL API, a CLI, and an MCP server. It is still a small project, so it is a serious option for engineering-led startups rather than a one-for-one Vanta replacement.

What is Probo?

Probo bundles the working parts of a compliance program. The repository lists a risk register with scoring and treatment strategies, a control library with custom framework import and export and a Statement of Applicability, vendor and third-party risk with DPA and BAA tracking, data-privacy tooling such as DPIAs, transfer impact assessments, and rights requests, access reviews, audit programs, evidence collection, and document management with versioning, approvals, and e-signatures. It also provides a public compliance page and cookie and consent management. The website lists the frameworks it supports: SOC 2 Type 1 and 2, ISO 27001, ISO 27701, ISO 42001, GDPR, HIPAA, CCPA, FERPA, CASA, NIS2, and DORA. The commercial offering pairs this automation with a compliance officer who handles policies, controls, reviews, and assessments, with access through Slack.

Installation & self-hosting

The docs describe two self-hosting routes: Docker Compose for a single host (the production compose file runs the Probo daemon with PostgreSQL and SeaweedFS) and Kubernetes with an official Helm chart. Requirements are PostgreSQL 18 or newer (bundled or external) and S3-compatible object storage. The docs are frank about operator duties: restrict access, generate and rotate secrets, back up PostgreSQL and stored files together so they stay consistent, monitor health and certificate expiry, configure outbound email, and test upgrades and rollback. Self-hosters also supply OAuth client credentials for each connector their organizations use, which Probo Cloud handles for you. For local development you need Go 1.27+, Node.js 24.15+, npm 12.0.2+, Docker, and mkcert, and the console runs on localhost:8080.

User experience

The web console is the main interface, and the project also ships a prb command-line tool with 44+ command groups, a GraphQL API, an MCP API with 270+ tools for LLM agents, webhooks, an n8n community node, and task sync with Linear. In the managed service you work with your compliance officer and get notified only when your input is needed, with documents and workflows reachable from Slack. This section reflects the documentation and repository; we did not run Probo.

Key features

  • Risk register with scoring, control library, and custom framework import and export
  • Vendor risk with DPA and BAA tracking, DPIAs, and data-subject rights requests
  • Access reviews, audit programs, and evidence collection
  • Policy and document management with approvals and e-signatures
  • Public compliance page and cookie and consent management
  • CLI, GraphQL API, MCP API with 270+ tools, webhooks, and an n8n node
  • Support for SOC 2, ISO 27001, ISO 27701, ISO 42001, GDPR, HIPAA, NIS2, DORA, and others

What Probo does well

  • Permissive MIT license with a Developer Certificate of Origin and no contributor license agreement
  • Programmable from end to end, which suits teams that want to script their compliance workflow
  • Honest deployment docs that spell out what an operator must run and secure
  • Two ways to buy: self-host the code, or have a compliance officer run the program

Where Probo falls short

  • Small community (about 1,400 stars) compared with commercial GRC vendors and little public evidence of audit-firm relationships
  • Needs PostgreSQL 18 or newer and S3-compatible storage, which raises the bar for self-hosting
  • Self-hosters must register OAuth credentials for every connector they want, and the connector list is not published in the docs we read
  • No public pricing for Probo Cloud or the managed service
  • The README and docs do not describe how evidence collection works technically, which matters when an auditor asks

Pricing

The code is free under MIT, and the cost of self-hosting is your infrastructure (PostgreSQL 18+, object storage, backups, monitoring) and engineering time. Probo Cloud is run by Probo with EU or US regions, and the compliance-officer service is sold separately. The pages we reviewed show no prices, so request a quote.

Probo vs Vanta

Vanta, Drata, Scrut, and Sprinto are established compliance platforms with long integration lists, relationships with audit firms, and polished onboarding. Probo's differences are an open codebase you can self-host and extend, a CLI and MCP interface for automation, and a service-led option where a person owns the program. The practical risk is on the audit side: confirm that your chosen auditor accepts the evidence and reports Probo produces before you build your SOC 2 timeline on it.

Best for

  • Engineering-led startups preparing for SOC 2 or ISO 27001 that want to script their controls
  • Companies that need compliance data inside their own infrastructure or region
  • Teams that want a managed compliance officer but also want an exit path through open source
  • Anyone who wants to feed compliance state into agents through MCP

Not ideal for

  • Teams that need the broadest catalog of ready-made integrations today
  • Organizations without anyone to run PostgreSQL, object storage, TLS, and upgrades
  • Companies that need a long public track record before trusting a compliance vendor

Final verdict

Probo is a credible open-source GRC platform with unusually good programmatic interfaces and honest operations docs. Treat your first audit as the real test: run a pilot, and have your auditor confirm they will accept what Probo produces.
