ToolJet Review

An open-source low-code platform for building internal tools, with AI app generation and an MCP server

Last reviewed: October 2026

TL;DR

ToolJet is an AGPL-3.0 platform for building admin panels, dashboards, and operational apps on top of your databases, APIs, and SaaS tools. The Community Edition has a visual builder with 80+ components, 90+ data sources, a built-in database, and Docker and Kubernetes deployment, while AI app generation, workflows, SCIM, audit logs, and Git sync are listed under the Enterprise edition. A beta MCP server lets coding agents build ToolJet apps.

What is ToolJet?

ToolJet is an open-source platform for building internal tools: admin panels, dashboards, and operational apps that run on your existing databases, APIs, and SaaS systems. The README says you can build by prompting: ToolJet AI turns a description into pages, queries, and components, and the coding agent you already use can do the same through ToolJet's Model Context Protocol server (currently in beta), which works with Claude Code, Codex, and Grok Build as plugins and with Cursor or any MCP client. Community Edition features: a visual app builder with 80-plus responsive components, a built-in no-code database, multi-page apps with multiplayer editing, 90-plus data sources, flexible deployment, inline comments and granular access control, a CLI for plugins and connectors, JavaScript and Python inside apps, and security measures such as AES-256-GCM encryption and SSO support. The Enterprise side adds AI app generation, an AI query builder, AI debugging, an agent builder, workflows with branching and scheduling, modules, SOC 2 and GDPR readiness, audit logs, RBAC and SCIM, multi-environment management, GitSync, white-labeling, embedded apps, row-level and component-level access control, and SLAs.

Installation & self-hosting

Create a ToolJet Cloud account for managed hosting, or try it locally with a single docker run command on port 80 using the tooljet/try:ee-lts-latest image with a volume for data; the README recommends the LTS version for upgrades. Deployment guides cover Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, AWS EC2, ECS and EKS, GCP, Azure, DigitalOcean, and OpenShift. Note that the quick-start image tag is the enterprise-edition LTS build. We did not run it.

User experience

A drag-and-drop builder with a component palette, query panel, and live preview, plus the ability to write JavaScript or Python where needed. The AI prompting features are Enterprise-tier according to the README. We did not use the builder.

Key features

  • Visual builder with 80+ components
  • 90+ data sources and a built-in no-code database
  • JavaScript and Python scripting inside apps
  • Multiplayer editing and inline comments
  • AI app generation and MCP server (beta)
  • Self-hosting on Docker, Kubernetes, and major clouds
  • Enterprise: SCIM, audit logs, GitSync, white-labeling

What ToolJet does well

  • Broad data source coverage for internal tools
  • Flexible self-hosting options
  • Active and well starred, about 41,100 stars
  • Transparent split between Community and Enterprise features

Where ToolJet falls short

  • AI generation, workflows, modules, and Git sync are Enterprise features
  • Cloud plans cap end users at 50 on Free through Pro, and the plans page lists no per-end-user price
  • AGPL-3.0 for the community edition
  • The Docker quick-start image is the Enterprise LTS build, which can confuse licensing expectations

Pricing

Cloud per builder per month: Free $0 (2 builders, 50 end users, 10 apps, 100 AI credits), Basic $23, Pro $79 (adds custom styling, version control, email support), Team $199 (adds SSO, custom user groups, white-labeling, audit logs, Git sync, modules; $249 if billed monthly), and Enterprise custom with unlimited end users, SCIM, and air-gapped deployment. Annual billing saves 20%, and AI credit add-ons cost $1 per 100 credits.

ToolJet vs Retool

Retool is the best-known hosted low-code internal tools platform, with per-user pricing and a polished builder. ToolJet offers a similar builder you can self-host, with a free community edition and a lower entry price, but enterprise-grade capabilities are paid.

See all Retool alternatives

Best for

  • Teams building admin panels and dashboards on top of existing databases
  • Companies that want to self-host internal tooling
  • Developers who like adding code where needed

Not ideal for

  • Teams who need AI generation without paying for Enterprise
  • Public-facing consumer apps
  • Organizations that cannot accept AGPL

Alternatives

Final verdict

ToolJet is a capable Retool alternative for internal tools. Check which features you need against the Community and Enterprise split before you commit.
