OpenBB Review
An open data platform that connects financial data to Python, Excel, REST, and AI agents, with a paid Workspace on top
Last reviewed: October 2026
TL;DR
OpenBB is a connect-once, consume-everywhere layer for financial data: proprietary, licensed, and public sources are integrated once and then exposed to Python, a CLI, a Workspace UI, MCP servers for AI agents, and REST APIs. It is the open-source answer to a Bloomberg Terminal for teams that bring their own data, but it is a data platform rather than a data vendor, so you still license the data. A note on the vendor's pricing page says the technology is moving toward open-source stewardship with the Workspace codebase going to FINOS, so terms may change.

What is OpenBB?
The repository is the Open Data Platform (ODP), an open-source toolset for integrating proprietary, licensed, and public data sources into downstream applications. The docs describe three ODP components: ODP Desktop (connects any data source to AI applications and research dashboards), ODP Python (one API that can be deployed across REST, Python, Jupyter, and Excel), and ODP CLI (automates data collection from the terminal). In Python you use from openbb import obb (the README's example calls obb.equity.price.historical for a ticker and converts the result to a DataFrame). OpenBB Workspace is the enterprise UI for visualizing datasets and using AI agents, and the README points to two open repositories for extending it, backends-for-openbb for data and agents-for-openbb for AI agents. OpenAlternative describes bring-your-own AI models, a customizable UI with team collaboration, data kept inside the customer's environment, and SOC 2 Type II compliance.
Installation & self-hosting
Install the Python package with pip install openbb, or the CLI with pip install openbb-cli, on Python 3.10 through 3.14, or clone the repository. To run a local backend for Workspace, install openbb and run openbb-api, which starts a FastAPI and Uvicorn server at 127.0.0.1:6900. In Workspace you go to Apps, choose Connect backend, enter that URL, test, and add it. The repository has moved to the openbq-org organization on GitHub (previously OpenBB-finance). The README does not list data providers, which are documented in the reference at docs.openbb.co, and it includes a disclaimer that data may be inaccurate and trading involves risk. The docs we read do not state install requirements beyond the Python versions or give a licensing statement beyond the README.
User experience
Analysts either script against the Python SDK, work in Workspace (a browser-based interface at pro.openbb.co), or use the Excel integration, and the point is that all of them hit the same backend. Workspace itself does not ship financial data beyond a limited sandbox powered by Financial Modeling Prep, so its main value is connecting your own datasets. Custom agents and the Workspace MCP server are listed for all editions, and the Copilot is optional, with 20 queries per day on the free plan that you can extend with your own API key. This section reflects the README, docs, and pricing page; we did not run OpenBB.
Key features
- Python SDK, CLI, REST API, Excel, and MCP servers from one integration layer
- Integrates proprietary, licensed, and public data sources
- Workspace UI for datasets and AI agents, with extension repositories for backends and agents
- Local backend with openbb-api on FastAPI
- Bring-your-own AI models, with data kept in your environment
- Use cases from equity research and credit risk to private equity due diligence
What OpenBB does well
- One integration point for many data sources instead of per-tool connectors
- Open source foundation with about 74,000 stars and commits within a day of this review
- Fits AI agent workflows through MCP and REST, with custom agents on every plan
- Python-first, so quants and analysts can script it directly
Where OpenBB falls short
- It is a platform, not a data provider, so you still pay for the data you connect, and Workspace includes only a limited sandbox from Financial Modeling Prep
- Workspace sharing, role-based access control, and the Excel add-in are not on the free Community plan, and Lite ($2,400 per year) targets teams under 10
- The README does not say which parts of Workspace are open source, and the vendor says the Workspace codebase is moving to FINOS, so terms and availability may change
- License information differs between sources (Apache-2.0 in the README, AGPL-3.0 on OpenAlternative), so verify before redistribution
- Data accuracy is not guaranteed, and the README includes a trading-risk disclaimer
Pricing
The open data platform is free to install. OpenBB Workspace plans are Community (free for individuals, cloud-hosted, with 20 Copilot queries per day and no dashboard sharing, role-based access control, or Excel add-in), Lite ($2,400 per year team license for self-hosted deployment in a VPC or on-premises, for small teams under 10, adding sharing, RBAC, and data export), Pro (custom team pricing adding the Excel add-in, multi-entity infrastructure, your own identity provider, external sharing, and OEM or white-label options), and Snowflake ($500 per year per seat, hosted on Snowflake). The vendor notes an October 1, 2026 update saying the technology is moving toward open-source stewardship, so confirm current terms. Your real costs are the market-data licenses you connect.
OpenBB vs Bloomberg Terminal
A Bloomberg Terminal bundles proprietary data, news, analytics, and messaging in one expensive subscription. OpenBB does not provide its own market data: it integrates the sources you already license, plus public ones, and exposes them to scripts, a workspace, and AI agents. That makes it cheaper and more flexible for teams that can assemble data feeds, and a poor substitute for a Terminal if you need its proprietary data and network. Power BI, Tableau, and Looker are general BI tools without this financial-data focus.
See all Bloomberg Terminal alternativesBest for
- Quant and research teams that want a scriptable layer over many financial data sources
- Firms that want AI agents querying their own data through MCP
- Teams that want to keep financial data inside their own environment
Not ideal for
- Users who need Bloomberg's proprietary data, news, and messaging network
- Non-technical investors who want a turnkey data subscription
- Teams that need a fully open-source UI with clear licensing for every component

Final verdict
OpenBB is a strong open-source integration layer for financial data and AI agents. Work out which data sources you will license and which Workspace pieces you actually need, and confirm the current license and ownership of the components you plan to use given the move toward FINOS.
